Greetings Core 1 swimmers and families!
Joliet Fab 50's recap- Core 1 had many good swims at the Joliet meet. Even if your child did not get many time drops, if they remembered to work on what the coaches tell them at practice, we consider that a good swim! It is very hard to get a time drop EVERY time your child swims. Good technique, streamlines, turns, breathing patterns, etc are all part of a good swim too- not just a time drop.
INDY 2012 recap- What a phenomenal meet for Core 1!! There were many swimmers having their first experience at INDY this year. It is a fast pool and Core 1 had many fast swims!! Congratulations to the 9-10 boys Medley and free relays for coming in 1st place!! Logan Phipps, Pierce Salafatinos, Austin Martinson, and Brad Sanford came from outside lanes to win both events! Way to go boys!!
The season is coming to an end with only 2 meets left for many swimmers. The Fox meet will be held at Nequa Valley on Feb 10-12. The 11-12 girls are in the morning session while the 11-12 boys and all 10 and unders are in the afternoon session. I will send a reminder e-mail out next week with warm-up times. Entries are posted on the website. The Feed the Fire meet will be held at Oswego East on Feb 18-19. Any swimmer who has achieved 4 or more regional times will not be entered in this meet. This meet has a prelim-final format for swimmers 9 and up. That means if they swim fast enough in prelims, they will come back and swim the event again in finals. More information will be sent as that meet gets closer.
BUTTERFLY MECHANICS Pressing forward: As much as possible, try to swim straight along the water to keep moving forward instead of wasting energy going UP and DOWN. To do this, press forward with your CHEST and CHIN as the arms reach out in front.
Two Equal Kicks: Two equally big kicks are critical to efficient butterfly. The first kick, which feels most natural, should coincide with the HAND ENTRY. Start the second kick as the arms PASS THE HIPS underwater. This will help propel your arms back around to reset for the next pull. To get the most from each kick, be sure to bend your knees and use your ABS as well as your legs.
Breathing: Even great butterfliers sometimes struggle to keep moving horizontally when breathing. While it is tempting to arch your back to get air, doing so will result in a too-high stroke that interrupts your momentum. The key is to keep the CHIN AT tHE SURFACE. Time the breath so the head breaks the surface in the MIDDLE of the catch. It is natural for your hips to drop slightly, but maintaining a steady BREATHING PATTERN will minimize this.
Attendance will be updated tonight, 1/30. If there are any discrepancies please let Coach Missy know!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Coach Missy.
